No it's not just $15 yes the test is $15 at most places And after you take your test and it gets summited 2-3 weeks later the FCC will send you a link to send them $35 for your license then a few days to a few weeks later you will get your call sign but no the license is not free I don't know maybe a few years ago it might have been free but it's not now

My guess is that you are talking to a local repeater or base station that is linked to a voip net. That only way you would be able to talk across the country is for you to be at about 10’000 feet.

You mentioned the high cost of repeaters. I make significant extra donations to one of the clubs in my metro area to be earmarked for repeater maintenance/improvements. You can drain down a club bank account quickly for unexpected repeater repairs or relocations. My time is spent on the HF bands so I don't even use the local VHF and UHF repeaters but I understand their importance.

#1 should be to buy extra batteries. The are inexpensive and greatly improve the duration of time you can use the radio. In a disaster, it may be overcast so solar is out. Wall power may be unavailable. If you have multiple batteries, you can go several days without charging. Good video but for me, #1 is extra batteries.

At 2:47 you said that you need a license to use a Baofang radio...not true. You do, however, need a license to transmit on a Baofang radio if you are on frequencies that require a license.

You didn’t explain how to connect to other repeaters. I googled it and there explanation was incorrect I watched other videos and they didn’t explain it either I ask other ham operators they didn’t know what I was talking about. Now this is as far as I’ve got you need to reach a Echo link repeater find the node of the repeater you want to reach key the mike and type in the node number it will say your connected to disconnect key mike and push star it will say disconnected but I have yet to talk to anyone doing this so I don’t know if this is right.
